Swimrun Hydra 2026
Swimrun Hydra is the season-closing race of the My Swimrun Championships qualifier series — and arguably the most exotic. Scheduled for November 2026, this qualifier takes teams around the coastline and interior of Hydra, a car-free Greek island in the Saronic Gulf where donkeys still carry supplies and the only way to explore is on foot or by boat.
The combination of warm Aegean water, rocky island terrain, and the unique character of Hydra makes this a bucket-list swimrun. The November timing offers relief from summer crowds and heat, while water temperatures remain pleasant at 19-21C — warmer than many summer events in northern Europe.
Course and Venue
The Hydra course circles portions of the island, using its rocky coastline and hillside paths to create a challenging and beautiful route:
- Swim sections: Coastal and bay crossings ranging from 200m to 1km in the Aegean Sea
- Run sections: Stone paths, mule tracks, rocky trails, and pine-forest tracks
- Elevation: Significant — Hydra rises to 590m and the course includes steep climbs from sea level
- Water temperature: 19-21C in November
The rocky coastline means swim entries and exits can be technical — sharp rocks and sea urchins require care. The running terrain is uneven, with centuries-old stone paths and loose scree on hillside sections. Sturdy trail shoes with good grip are essential.
Getting to Hydra
By Air and Ferry
Fly to Athens International Airport (ATH), which has direct flights from most European capitals, the Middle East, and North America. From the airport, take the metro (Line 3 to Monastiraki, then Line 1 to Piraeus) or a taxi (approximately 1 hour) to Piraeus port.
From Piraeus, high-speed catamarans operated by Hellenic Seaways and Alpha Lines reach Hydra in approximately 1.5-2 hours. The conventional ferry takes about 3.5 hours but is cheaper. Departures are typically in the morning and late afternoon.
On the Island
There are no cars or motorbikes on Hydra. From the port, everything is reached on foot, by water taxi, or by donkey. The race venue is accessible by foot from the harbour. Pack light — you will carry your bags.
Accommodation
Hydra's accommodation is concentrated around the port town. November is low season, so availability is good and prices are reasonable compared to summer.
- Hydra port: Boutique hotels, traditional stone guesthouses, and a handful of luxury options
- Kamini/Vlychos: Small settlements west of the port with quieter, more affordable rooms
- Athens (pre/post): Stay a night in Athens before and after — convenient for early ferry departures
Book accommodation early despite the low season — Hydra has limited rooms and race participants will fill the port-area options quickly.
