ÖTILLÖ 20th Anniversary 2026

In 2006, a small group of athletes gathered in the Stockholm archipelago to race across islands by alternating between swimming and running. It was an eccentric idea — born from a bar bet — and nobody could have predicted what it would become. Twenty years later, swimrun is a global sport with hundreds of races across 24 countries, and ÖTILLÖ remains the name that started it all.

The 20th Anniversary celebration on September 5, 2026 brings the worldwide swimrun community to Stockholm for a special event held two days before the World Championship. It is a chance to race, reconnect, and celebrate two decades of a sport that has changed the lives of thousands of athletes.

Event Format and Schedule

The 20th Anniversary event is designed as a celebration rather than a pure competition. While it includes a race element, the emphasis is on community, history, and the shared experience of swimrun at the place where it all began.

  • Date: September 5, 2026 (Saturday)
  • Location: Stockholm, Sweden — the race uses sections of the inner archipelago
  • Format: A special course designed for the anniversary, shorter than the World Championship and accessible to a broader field of participants
  • Social events: Pre- and post-race gatherings, awards, and retrospectives on 20 years of ÖTILLÖ
  • World Championship preview: Many athletes use this event as a warm-up before the main championship on September 7

Full event details, registration, and schedule are published on otilloswimrun.com.

20 Years of ÖTILLÖ

The ÖTILLÖ story begins with a wager between four friends: could they traverse the outer Stockholm archipelago from Sandhamn to Utö by swimming between islands and running across them? That challenge became the first ÖTILLÖ race, and the route became the World Championship course that elite swimrun athletes train years to complete.

Over two decades, ÖTILLÖ has grown from a single Swedish race to a global series spanning three continents. The sport it created — swimrun — has spawned independent race series, national federations, and a community of athletes who value partnership, endurance, and the raw experience of moving through natural landscapes without the infrastructure of traditional triathlon.

Getting to Stockholm

By Air

Stockholm Arlanda Airport (ARN) has direct flights from most European cities and many intercontinental routes. The Arlanda Express train reaches Stockholm Central Station in 20 minutes. Budget airlines also serve Stockholm Skavsta (NYO), approximately 100km south of the city, connected by airport buses.

By Train

SJ (Swedish Railways) connects Stockholm to Gothenburg (3 hours), Malmö/Copenhagen (5 hours), and Oslo (5.5 hours). Stockholm Central Station is in the heart of the city with excellent public transport connections.

Accommodation

September is still high season in Stockholm, and the combination of the 20th Anniversary event and the World Championship will put pressure on accommodation. Book as early as possible.

  • Gamla Stan: Stockholm's medieval old town — atmospheric, central, popular with visitors
  • Södermalm: Trendy south island with good restaurants, bars, and a younger atmosphere
  • Östermalm: Upscale district near the waterfront, quieter than Gamla Stan
  • Nacka/Värmdö: Eastern suburbs closer to the archipelago ferry terminals, more affordable
  • Hostels and budget options: Stockholm has several well-run hostels including the famous af Chapman ship hostel on Skeppsholmen

If you are racing both the Anniversary event and the World Championship, consider staying in Nacka or Värmdö — closer to the archipelago logistics and quieter for recovery between events.

Combining with the World Championship

With the 20th Anniversary on September 5 and the World Championship on September 7, many athletes will be in Stockholm for an extended race weekend. If you plan to race both:

  • Recovery window: 48 hours between events is short. Treat the Anniversary as a controlled effort, not an all-out race.
  • Nutrition focus: Prioritise refuelling immediately after the Anniversary event. Glycogen restoration and hydration are critical for a turnaround this tight.
  • Gear management: Have two complete sets of race gear prepared — one may not dry fully in 48 hours.
  • Mental approach: The Anniversary is a celebration. Save your competitive intensity for the World Championship.

Preparation

The 20th Anniversary course is expected to be shorter and more accessible than the full World Championship. Nevertheless, standard swimrun preparation applies:

  • Cold water readiness: September Baltic water temperatures of 14-16°C require acclimatisation. A 2-3mm wetsuit is essential.
  • Team coordination: Swimrun is a pairs sport. Train with your partner to build pacing and communication habits.
  • Transition practice: Smooth water-to-land and land-to-water transitions save meaningful time across a multi-section course.

Use the Swimrun Pace Calculator to estimate your target pace for both the Anniversary event and the World Championship.
