Utrecht closes the Dutch HYROX calendar for 2026 with a four-day event from November 26-29. The Netherlands' fourth largest city and its most central rail hub, Utrecht is uniquely accessible: nearly every intercity train in the country passes through Utrecht Centraal. The Jaarbeurs exhibition complex directly beside the station is one of the country's most capable large event venues, making Utrecht a natural host for a major HYROX weekend.

Late November racing means cold, dark evenings outdoors, but the indoor competition environment is controlled and the Dutch functional fitness community is among the most active in Europe. Utrecht is an excellent choice for athletes who want to end their competitive year in front of a large, engaged home crowd before the Christmas break.

Date & Venue

The Jaarbeurs complex adjacent to Utrecht Centraal is the primary large-scale event venue in the city. Its integration with the main railway station makes it the most accessible possible location for a HYROX event in the Netherlands. Getting There

By Air

• Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS) -- approximately 30 minutes by direct Intercity train from Utrecht Centraal. One of Europe's best-connected airports with direct flights from virtually every major European city and worldwide destinations. The Amsterdam-Utrecht rail corridor is one of the busiest in the Netherlands with trains running every 15-30 minutes
• Eindhoven Airport (EIN) -- approximately 45-50 minutes by train from Utrecht via 's-Hertogenbosch. Budget airline hub for Ryanair and Wizz Air with routes from UK, Ireland, and other European cities
• Rotterdam The Hague Airport (RTM) -- approximately 45 minutes by train from Utrecht via Rotterdam Centraal. Smaller airport with selected European routes

By Train

• Utrecht Centraal is the Netherlands' busiest railway station and the central hub of the national rail network. Nearly all Intercity and Intercity Direct services pass through
• Amsterdam Centraal to Utrecht: approximately 30 minutes. Multiple departures every hour
• Rotterdam Centraal to Utrecht: approximately 40 minutes. Frequent direct service
• Eindhoven to Utrecht: approximately 45 minutes
• Brussels-Midi to Utrecht: approximately 2.5 hours by Intercity or Thalys via Antwerp and Rotterdam
• Paris Gare du Nord to Utrecht: approximately 3.5 hours via Brussels on Eurostar/Thalys services
• If the Jaarbeurs is the venue, the walk from the station to the hall entrance is under 3 minutes

By Public Transport

• Utrecht Centraal is the transport hub for city buses, trams, and regional trains. All bus and tram services originate from the station and surrounding interchange
• U-OV bus and tram services cover the city. For the Jaarbeurs area, walking from the station is the most practical option
• Amsterdam Schiphol provides a direct train every 30 minutes that stops at Utrecht Centraal — no connection needed. Extremely practical for international travellers
• Cycling in Utrecht is ubiquitous. The city has world-class cycling infrastructure and rental bikes are available everywhere. Practical for athletes staying in the centre

By Car

• Utrecht sits at the junction of the A2 (Amsterdam-Brussels), A12 (The Hague-Germany), and A28 (Groningen) motorways — one of the most important road intersections in the Netherlands
• Amsterdam to Utrecht by car: approximately 45 minutes without traffic, but the A2 can be congested during peak times
• Rotterdam to Utrecht: approximately 45 minutes via the A20 and A12
• Parking near Jaarbeurs is available in several car parks adjacent to the complex. Given the train accessibility, public transport is generally easier for a race weekend than driving and parking

Where to Stay

Utrecht has a good range of accommodation, though total capacity is smaller than Amsterdam. The city centre is compact and most hotels are within easy walking or cycling distance of the Jaarbeurs and Utrecht Centraal.

• City centre / Oudegracht canal area -- Utrecht's stunning historic centre with the double-level Oudegracht canal and Dom Tower. Boutique hotels, canal-side restaurants, and excellent cycling access to the station. A beautiful base for a race weekend
• Hoog Catharijne / Centraal station area -- the shopping and business district directly adjacent to the station and Jaarbeurs. Practical and central. Several well-known hotel chains (Moxy, ibis, NH Hotels) are located here
• Transwijk / Kanaleneiland area -- residential neighbourhoods south and southwest of the centre with budget accommodation. Direct tram links to the station
• For more options, Amsterdam is 30 minutes by train and has significantly more total hotel capacity. An Amsterdam base is entirely practical for a Utrecht race
• Airbnb is widely used in Utrecht and can offer better value than hotels for a multi-night stay, particularly in the historic centre

Tip: The Jaarbeurs-adjacent location means that if the venue is confirmed there, you could theoretically check into a station-area hotel, race, and check out all without using public transport. Very few HYROX venues in Europe match this level of logistical convenience.

Training in Utrecht

Utrecht has a strong functional fitness community relative to its size. The large student population keeps demand for fitness facilities high, and several specialist studios have emerged to serve the HYROX training market.

• CrossFit affiliates -- Utrecht has several established CrossFit boxes with HYROX-appropriate equipment. Most offer guest day passes. Some host HYROX-specific training sessions
• Functional fitness studios -- a growing number of studios across the city have invested in SkiErgs, rowing machines, sled tracks, and wall balls appropriate for HYROX preparation. Contact studios directly to confirm equipment availability
• Commercial gym chains (Basic-Fit, Trainmore, OneFit) are well represented in Utrecht. Day passes are available at most chains
• For more options, Amsterdam is 30 minutes by train and has a larger number of specialist HYROX training facilities

Running Routes

• Oudegracht canal paths -- the iconic double-level canal runs through the heart of the city. The upper-level street is suitable for shorter easy runs. The lower wharf level is atmospheric and unique to Utrecht
• Amelisweerd (Rhijnauwen forest) -- a popular forest park 3 km east of the centre on the south bank of the Rhine. Extensive flat and undulating trail paths. A favourite with Utrecht's running community for long runs and tempo sessions
• Griftpark and Julianapark -- parks north and northwest of the centre with good paths and open grass. Suitable for shorter efforts and drills
• The flat Dutch landscape around Utrecht is excellent for cycling and easy long runs on quiet roads and cycle paths extending in all directions

Race Day Tips

• Arrive at least 90 minutes before your wave start. Large Dutch HYROX events at Jaarbeurs can have significant registration queues on peak wave mornings
• Collect your race bib and timing chip at registration. Bring a printed or digital copy of your confirmation and a valid ID
• Late November in Utrecht is cold and often wet. Bring warm, waterproof clothing for outdoor travel and pack dry kit for the journey home after racing
• Dutch HYROX fields are consistently strong. The Netherlands produces some of Europe's fastest HYROX athletes. Expect a competitive field across all categories
• Utrecht Centraal's direct train connections make same-day travel from Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and other cities straightforward. Many athletes commute on race day rather than staying overnight
• Bring your own nutrition. Dutch events are well organised but vendor queues build during peak wave times at large four-day events
• Spectators: Entry is typically free for supporters. Utrecht's compact layout makes it easy for spectators to watch athletes across the course from multiple vantage points
