HYROX Shanghai 2026

Shanghai is HYROX's flagship Chinese city, hosting two separate events in 2026: May 16-17 and October 31-November 1. Two editions in one year reflects the demand from China's rapidly growing functional fitness community. Shanghai's wealth, cosmopolitan character, and world-class exhibition venues make it the natural anchor of HYROX's China strategy.

International athletes have two compelling windows to race: the spring edition in mid-May offers mild, pleasant conditions before summer heat arrives; the autumn edition at the end of October brings cooler temperatures and the energy of Halloween weekend. Either event pairs well with time exploring one of the world's great cities.

Getting There

By Air

  • Pudong International Airport (PVG) — Shanghai's main international hub, located about 30 km east of the city centre in Pudong. Direct flights from Europe, North America, Southeast Asia, Japan, Korea, and the Middle East
  • The Shanghai Maglev connects PVG to Longyang Road station in just 8 minutes at up to 430 km/h. Transfer to Metro Line 2 for central Shanghai — total journey to People's Square is about 40 minutes
  • Metro Line 2 provides a slower but direct connection from PVG to central Shanghai (about 50-60 minutes to People's Square)
  • Hongqiao International Airport (SHA) — handles domestic flights and some regional routes (Tokyo, Seoul, Taipei). Integrated with Hongqiao Railway Station, providing high-speed rail connections across China
  • Taxi and Didi (China's ride-hailing platform) operate from both airports. PVG to central Shanghai is approximately CNY 150-200 by taxi

By Metro

  • Shanghai Metro — one of the world's largest metro systems with 20 lines and 508 stations. Fast, clean, and comprehensive. The single most effective way to travel around the city
  • Key hubs: People's Square (Lines 1, 2, 8), Xujiahui (Lines 1, 9, 11), Hongqiao Railway Station (Lines 2, 10, 17)
  • If the venue is SNIEC (Pudong), use Metro Line 7 or Line 6 (Huamu Road area). If NECC (Hongqiao), use Metro Line 2 or Line 10 (National Exhibition Center station)
  • Purchase a Shanghai Public Transport Card or use Alipay / WeChat Pay for contactless metro payment. International credit cards accepted at ticket machines

By Ride-Hailing

  • Didi is China's dominant ride-hailing app. The international version accepts foreign payment cards and is available in English — essential for international visitors without a Chinese payment account
  • Standard taxis (metered) are readily available throughout Shanghai. Flag them down on major streets or use taxi apps
  • Shanghai traffic in peak hours is significant, particularly around the Inner Ring Road. Allow extra time for road-based travel in the morning and late afternoon

Where to Stay

Shanghai has accommodation options at every price point. Staying near a metro line gives you the most flexibility.

  • Jing'an / Nanjing West Road — central Shanghai with excellent hotel concentration, direct Metro Line 2 access, and walkable streets. One of the best bases for international visitors
  • Xujiahui — a major transport hub in southwest Shanghai with multiple metro lines. Close to the French Concession area. Good mix of business and boutique hotels
  • Pudong — Lujiazui — Shanghai's financial district with luxury hotels and iconic skyline views. Well positioned if the venue is in Pudong. Quieter on weekends than Puxi
  • The Bund / Huangpu — iconic riverside location with upmarket hotels and prime sightseeing. Metro Lines 2, 10 provide connectivity. Higher prices but unmatched atmosphere
  • Hongqiao — practical choice if flying domestic or if the venue is NECC. Quieter than central Shanghai but well connected by metro

Tip: Shanghai hotels are competitively priced by global standards. Book early for the May edition as it coincides with spring conference season. The October edition is quieter for hotel availability.

Training in Shanghai

Shanghai has one of Asia's most developed functional fitness ecosystems. CrossFit affiliates, boutique studios, and HYROX-specific training options are well established across the city.

  • CrossFit Shanghai — multiple strong affiliates in the city. CrossFit Jing'an and CrossFit 1949 (in the French Concession) are well-regarded by the international community
  • HYROX Training Studios — several studios now offer HYROX-specific programming with sleds, ski ergs, and SkiErg machines. Enquire at CrossFit affiliates for referrals
  • Barry's Bootcamp Shanghai — established location in Jing'an with treadmill and functional training formats
  • F45 Training — multiple locations across Shanghai with functional group fitness classes
  • Major commercial gyms (Anytime Fitness, Fitness First, Shanghai Sports Federation facilities) provide cardio equipment and weights throughout the city

Running Routes

  • The Bund and Binjiang Avenue — the most iconic running route in Shanghai. The Bund waterfront promenade stretches for several kilometres along the Huangpu River, wide and pedestrian-friendly, with views of Pudong. Best run early morning before tourist crowds
  • Jing'an Park — a compact green space in central Shanghai suitable for short recovery runs
  • Zhongshan Park (Changning) — a larger park in west Shanghai with running paths and a good local running community
  • Century Park (Pudong) — a large 140-hectare park in Pudong with well-maintained running paths and a strong weekend running scene. Metro Line 2 (Century Avenue station)
  • Binjiang Forest Park — a nature park at the confluence of the Huangpu and Yangtze rivers in Pudong, offering longer trail options away from city traffic
  • May running conditions in Shanghai are excellent — mild and relatively dry before the June-July plum rain season. October is also ideal for outdoor running

Nearby HYROX Races

China and the wider Asia Pacific region offer several other HYROX events across the 2025/26 season that pair well with a Shanghai race:

  • Beijing: March 21-22, 2026 (approximately 1,300 km north, about 2 hours by flight or 5.5 hours by G-series high-speed rail)
  • Wuhan: April 11, 2026 (approximately 840 km west, about 4.5 hours by G-series high-speed rail)
  • Hong Kong: May 8-10, 2026 (approximately 1,220 km south, about 2 hours by flight)
  • Hangzhou: TBC, 2026 (approximately 170 km southwest, about 45 minutes by high-speed rail — check hyrox.com for schedule)

Race Day Tips

  • Download Didi and set up payment before race weekend — it is significantly easier than hailing taxis if you do not speak Mandarin
  • Arrive at least 90 minutes before your wave start. Large HYROX events in China attract significant local participation and registration queues can be long
  • Bring your passport for registration. Chinese athletes should bring their national ID. A digital or printed race confirmation is required
  • Install WeChat and Alipay before arriving in China. Many payment systems, QR codes, and services operate through these apps. International versions accept foreign credit cards
  • Shanghai in May can be humid (50-70% RH) even indoors. Hydrate thoroughly the day before your race
  • Post-race nutrition is outstanding in Shanghai — the city's food scene is world-class for recovery meals
  • VPN note: Many foreign apps and websites are blocked in mainland China. Download and configure a VPN before travelling if you need access to Google, Instagram, or WhatsApp
