Ottawa is Canada's capital and a strong endurance sports city. It hosts one of the largest marathon weekends in Canada every spring, and the local running and functional fitness communities are well established. HYROX here draws participants from Eastern Ontario, Quebec, and the US Northeast.

The city is compact, bilingual (English and French), and full of green space. The Rideau Canal, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is also one of the best running paths in the country. Ottawa is smaller than Toronto or Montreal, which means shorter lines, easier logistics, and a tighter community around the event.

The Venues

Shaw Centre

The Shaw Centre is located in the heart of downtown Ottawa, directly on the Rideau Canal. It offers a modern, glass-fronted facility within walking distance of Parliament Hill, ByWard Market, and most downtown hotels. This is the more central option and ideal for athletes who want a walkable race weekend.

EY Centre

The EY Centre is located near Ottawa Macdonald-Cartier International Airport. It offers a larger exhibition space with ample parking and easy airport access. If the event is held here, driving or rideshare is the best transport option.

Getting There

By Air

• Ottawa Macdonald-Cartier (YOW) is about 20 minutes south of downtown. Served by Air Canada, WestJet, Porter, and several US carriers with connections through Toronto, Montreal, and select US cities
• Rideshare from YOW to downtown costs roughly CA$25-35. OC Transpo bus Route 97 also connects the airport to downtown
• Montreal-Trudeau (YUL) is about 2 hours east if you find cheaper flights; Toronto Pearson (YYZ) is about 4.5 hours west

By Train

• VIA Rail: Ottawa Station is about 10 minutes from downtown. Direct service from Toronto (4.5 hours), Montreal (2 hours), and Kingston (2.5 hours)
• Montreal connection: Frequent daily service makes a day trip or weekend trip from Montreal straightforward

By Transit

• O-Train Confederation Line: Ottawa's LRT runs east-west through downtown, with a station at Rideau (near Shaw Centre) and Parliament
• OC Transpo buses: Comprehensive bus network covers the city

By Car

• From Toronto: Highway 401 east to Highway 416 north, about 4.5 hours
• From Montreal: Highway 417 west (Trans-Canada), about 2 hours
• From the US (Ogdensburg, NY): Cross at the Prescott-Ogdensburg bridge, about 1 hour to Ottawa
• Parking (Shaw Centre): Limited and expensive downtown. Use OC Transpo park-and-ride lots or hotel parking
• Parking (EY Centre): Ample free or low-cost parking at the venue

Where to Stay

• Downtown / ByWard Market -- Ottawa's liveliest area, with restaurants, bars, and shops within walking distance of the Shaw Centre. Hotels on Rideau Street and Sussex Drive are closest
• Centretown is the core business district along Elgin Street and Bank Street, with a range of hotels and easy transit access
• The Glebe is a residential neighborhood about 15 minutes south of downtown by bus, with local cafes and boutiques along Bank Street
• Gatineau (Quebec side) is just across the river with more affordable options, connected to downtown Ottawa by multiple bridges
• Budget hotels near YOW are convenient if the event is at the EY Centre

Training in Ottawa

Ottawa has strong running culture, several CrossFit affiliates, and good outdoor training conditions for three seasons of the year. Winters are cold, but the local athletes train through them.

• CrossFit Ottawa offers multiple programming tracks including functional fitness and competition prep
• GoodLife Fitness (multiple locations) has rowing machines, functional areas, and SkiErg access
• Movati Athletic (multiple locations) has full-service clubs with functional training equipment

Running Routes

• Rideau Canal Pathway is Ottawa's signature running route -- paved, flat, 7.8 km from downtown to Dow's Lake and beyond. In winter the canal becomes the world's largest skating rink, but the pathway stays clear for running
• Ottawa River Pathway runs along the Ontario side from Parliament Hill to Westboro Beach and beyond. Flat and well maintained, about 15 km one-way
• Gatineau Park is just across the river in Quebec -- trail running with moderate hills and forest. The parkways close to cars on weekend mornings, giving you traffic-free roads
• Colonel By Drive closes to vehicles on weekends, creating a traffic-free route parallel to the Rideau Canal
• Sir John A. Macdonald Parkway runs along the Ottawa River and closes to traffic on Sunday mornings

Weather Considerations

Ottawa has a continental climate with genuine four-season variety. Summer events benefit from warm weather (70-85 F / 20-30 C), while winter events can see temperatures well below freezing. The venue will be climate-controlled, but dress appropriately for the commute and plan for potential winter weather disruptions to flights.

• Arrival: At least 90 minutes before your start time
• Check-in: Pick up your bib and timing chip at the registration area
• Warm-up: Dedicated warm-up areas are provided inside the venue
• Nutrition: Bring your own gels, snacks, and electrolytes
• Spectators: Free entry for supporters
• Bilingual city: Ottawa is officially bilingual. HYROX staff and signage will generally be in English, but French is widely spoken
• US visitors: Bring your passport. The Canadian dollar typically trades below the US dollar, making Ottawa affordable for American visitors
