HYROX Maastricht 2026

Maastricht brings HYROX to the southern tip of the Netherlands with a four-day event from September 17-20, 2026. The oldest city in the Netherlands, Maastricht sits at the convergence of the Dutch, Belgian, and German borders — making it uniquely accessible from three countries simultaneously. Its compact, walkable historic centre and the large-scale MECC exhibition venue combine to make it a practical and enjoyable race destination.

September in Maastricht typically brings mild temperatures and the beginning of autumn colour in the surrounding Limburg hills. The Limburg landscape — the only genuinely hilly part of the Netherlands — offers some of the best running terrain in the Low Countries, a notable contrast to the flat conditions most Dutch athletes train in.

Date & Venue

The MECC (Maastricht Exhibition and Congress Centre) is Maastricht's primary large event venue and one of the most likely candidates for the HYROX race. It has hosted events of comparable scale including TEFAF, the world's leading art fair, and major trade exhibitions. Getting There

By Air

• Eindhoven Airport (EIN) -- approximately 60 km north of Maastricht. Ryanair and Wizz Air hub with excellent low-cost connections from the UK, Ireland, and other European cities. Bus connection from EIN to Eindhoven station, then direct train to Maastricht in approximately 1 hour total
• Brussels Airport (BRU) -- approximately 100 km west. Major international hub with connections worldwide. Direct trains from BRU to Brussels-Central and Brussels-Midi, then onward to Maastricht in approximately 1.5 hours total
• Cologne Bonn Airport (CGN) -- approximately 120 km east. Eurowings and Ryanair routes from various European cities. Train connections to Cologne Hauptbahnhof then direct Intercity to Maastricht in approximately 1.5 hours
• Maastricht Aachen Airport (MST) -- approximately 10 km north. Limited scheduled services but closest to the city. Check available routes as the event approaches

By Train

• Maastricht station is well connected to the Dutch, Belgian, and German rail networks
• Amsterdam Centraal to Maastricht: approximately 2.5 hours by Intercity direct train. Frequent departures
• Brussels-Midi to Maastricht via Liege: approximately 1 hour 30 minutes
• Cologne Hauptbahnhof to Maastricht: approximately 1 hour by direct Intercity train
• Rotterdam Centraal to Maastricht: approximately 2.5 hours
• The station is in the northwest of the city centre, within walking distance of the historic area and most hotels

By Public Transport

• Maastricht's compact centre is largely walkable from the station. Most hotels and the MECC are within a comfortable walk or short bus journey
• Arriva bus services cover the city and surrounding Limburg region. Useful for reaching the MECC or accommodation outside the centre
• Taxis and Uber/Bolt operate in Maastricht. Taxis are recommended for race-day travel with kit
• Cycling is practical in Maastricht as in all Dutch cities — rental bikes are available throughout the centre

By Car

• Maastricht is accessed via the A2 (Amsterdam-Brussels), A76, and E25 motorways. The city sits at the junction of Dutch, Belgian, and German road networks
• Cologne to Maastricht by car: approximately 1 hour via the A4 and A76
• Brussels to Maastricht by car: approximately 1.5 hours via the E40 and A3
• Parking near the MECC and city centre is available. Pre-book where possible for busy event weekends

Where to Stay

Maastricht has a range of good quality hotels, though total capacity is smaller than in larger Dutch cities. Booking early is important for a race weekend.

• City centre / Wyck neighbourhood -- the area between the station and the Maas river. Good mix of hotels, restaurants, and easy access to transport. Wyck is Maastricht's most lively neighbourhood with excellent cafes and bars
• Stadspark area -- south of the centre near the MECC. More residential but very practical if the event is at the MECC. Walking distance to the exhibition centre
• Liege (Belgium) -- approximately 30 minutes by train. A much larger city with significantly more hotel options at competitive prices. Worth considering if Maastricht accommodation sells out or proves expensive
• Boutique hotels are Maastricht's strength — the city has a sophisticated hospitality scene with several well-regarded independent properties
• Budget options including ibis and Campanile have Maastricht locations near the station

Tip: Maastricht is a compact city where most of what you need on race weekend is within walking or cycling distance. If you cannot find accommodation in Maastricht itself, Liege (BE) and Hasselt (BE) are both within 30-40 minutes by train.

Training in Maastricht

Maastricht has a functional fitness community proportionate to its size. For more equipment options, Liege and Eindhoven are both within easy reach.

• CrossFit affiliates -- Maastricht and the Limburg area have CrossFit boxes with HYROX-relevant equipment. Guest passes are generally available for visiting athletes
• Functional fitness studios -- a growing number of studios in the area have invested in appropriate equipment. Contact studios in advance to confirm SkiErg, sled, and rowing machine availability
• The Maastricht student population (Maastricht University is large relative to the city's size) means fitness facilities are well-used and reasonably well-equipped
• For more specialist HYROX training options, Liege or Aachen (both under 1 hour) may offer a wider selection

Running Routes

• Maas riverside paths -- flat paths along both banks of the Maas river through and around the city. Accessible from the historic centre and suitable for all distances and paces
• Limburg hills (Valkenburg area) -- approximately 10 km east of Maastricht, the hilly Limburg landscape offers genuinely challenging trail and road running that is unique in the Netherlands. Used by professional cycling teams for training camps. Highly recommended for hill repeat sessions
• Noorderplantsoen -- a park north of the centre with running paths and open grass areas. Good for warm-up and recovery runs
• The Sint-Pietersberg hill (150m), a few kilometres south of the centre, provides a local elevation challenge with trails through a protected nature reserve

Race Day Tips

• Arrive at least 90 minutes before your wave start. Registration, bag drop, and warm-up all take time at four-day events
• Collect your race bib and timing chip at registration. Bring a printed or digital copy of your confirmation and a valid ID
• Mid-September in Maastricht is typically mild — 15-20°C — with the chance of rain. Pack layers and waterproof clothing for travel to the venue
• Maastricht attracts athletes from the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany, giving the event a genuinely international field. Expect strong competition, particularly in the Open category
• Bring your own nutrition. Dutch and Belgian HYROX events are well organised, but vendor queues build at peak wave times
• Spectators: Spectator entry is typically free. Maastricht's compact layout means supporters can easily move between watching areas
• The historic centre has outstanding restaurants. Maastricht has a reputation for the best restaurant scene in the Netherlands outside Amsterdam — use the race weekend to explore
