Cologne hosts one of the most unique HYROX events in the European calendar. Running April 16-19 at Kölnmesse during FIBO — the world's leading fitness trade show — the Cologne race is embedded in a weekend where the entire global fitness industry converges on one location.

The combination of FIBO and HYROX makes this event unlike any other on the circuit. Athletes race on the same weekend they walk exhibition floors, attend fitness seminars, and meet the brands and coaches that define the sport. HYROX Cologne is not just a race — it is a destination event.

Kölnmesse is one of Europe's largest and best-equipped exhibition centres, directly accessible from Cologne Central Station and well served by the regional transport network. The Rhine riverfront location and the proximity of the Cathedral make Cologne a genuinely enjoyable city to spend a long weekend in.

Date & Venue

Kölnmesse covers over 280,000 square metres of exhibition space across multiple halls. The Köln Messe/Deutz station (served by S-Bahn S12 and S13) sits immediately adjacent to the venue, and Cologne Cathedral is visible directly across the Rhine. It is one of Europe's best-positioned exhibition centres for public transport access.

Important: HYROX Cologne during FIBO is one of the highest-demand events in the German calendar. Entries sell out quickly. FIBO also sells out its general trade admission — if you plan to combine race participation with FIBO trade attendance, book both independently and well in advance. Getting There

By Air

• Cologne Bonn Airport (CGN) -- approximately 15 km south-east of Kölnmesse. S-Bahn S13 runs directly from the airport to Köln Messe/Deutz station (approximately 30 minutes). A very convenient connection for race-day travel
• Düsseldorf Airport (DUS) is 60 km north and connected by S-Bahn (45-60 minutes). A useful option if CGN flights are sold out or more expensive
• Frankfurt Airport (FRA) is 180 km south-east. ICE trains from Frankfurt Airport station to Cologne Hbf take 60 minutes, then 5 minutes by S-Bahn to Köln Messe/Deutz
• During FIBO weekend, CGN and DUS both see increased demand. Book flights and airport transfers early

By Train

• Cologne Central Station (Köln Hbf) is a major ICE hub. Direct services from Berlin (4.5 hours), Munich (4.5 hours), Frankfurt (1h15), Hamburg (4h), Amsterdam (2.5h), Brussels (1.5h), Paris (3h by Thalys/ICE)
• From Köln Hbf, S-Bahn S12/S13 reaches Köln Messe/Deutz in 5 minutes, or walk across the Hohenzollern Bridge (10-12 minutes) for a scenic Rhine crossing directly to the venue
• Deutsche Bahn advance tickets (Sparpreis) can reduce costs significantly when booked 4-8 weeks out. Book on bahn.de or via the DB Navigator app

By Car

• Kölnmesse is signposted from the A1, A3, A4 and A57 motorways surrounding Cologne. Follow signs for "Koelnmesse" or "Köln Deutz"
• Kölnmesse has large multi-storey car parks. During FIBO, these fill early — arrive before 8 AM or use park-and-ride facilities on the city periphery
• Central Cologne's Umweltzone (low emission zone) requires a valid environmental sticker (Umweltplakette). All modern EU-registered vehicles qualify but confirm yours before driving in
• The B55a and Deutsche Bundesstraße B8 offer direct routes to the east bank of the Rhine near the venue

Where to Stay

Cologne hotels during FIBO weekend book out months in advance. This is not an exaggeration. Book as soon as you confirm your race entry or FIBO attendance.

• Cologne Deutz / Messe area -- directly adjacent to Kölnmesse. Hyatt Regency Köln, Hotel Mondial and several business hotels offer walking-distance access to the venue. These fill first
• Cologne city centre / near Hbf -- the Cathedral quarter has dense hotel coverage. Marriott, Hilton, Radisson BLU, Motel One and budget options like Ibis cluster around the central station, with easy S-Bahn or walking access to Kölnmesse
• Bonn -- 30 km south, accessible by S-Bahn in 30-35 minutes. Often still has availability when Cologne is sold out
• Düsseldorf (40 km north) and Aachen (70 km west) are commutable bases if Cologne and Bonn are fully booked -- though travel time adds stress on race morning
• Book through booking.com or hotels.com and filter by free cancellation -- FIBO dates sometimes shift slightly year to year

Training in Cologne

Cologne has a well-established fitness culture and a large CrossFit and functional fitness community, with several gyms specifically catering to HYROX athletes.

• CrossFit Cologne affiliates -- multiple boxes operate in different city districts. Regular HYROX prep programming and race-simulation sessions are common in the spring lead-up to FIBO
• Fitness First Cologne -- large commercial gym chain with multiple city locations, SkiErgs, rowers and sled equipment
• McFIT and FitX are the budget options with citywide coverage. Most locations have ergometers for rowing and SkiErg work
• Sportpark Agrippina (KölnBADER / Soccerworld complex) -- multi-sport campus with running tracks and functional training facilities
• Several personal training studios near Ehrenfeld and the Belgian Quarter cater specifically to competitive athletes and functional fitness

Running Routes

• Rheinuferpromenade (Rhine Promenade) -- a flat multi-kilometre path along both banks of the Rhine. Run from the Hohenzollern Bridge south towards the Südbrücke for 5-10 km of flat race-pace work with cathedral views
• Stadtwald (Cologne City Forest) -- large urban forest in the west of the city with marked trails and gentle terrain. Good for longer easy runs and aerobic base work
• Rheinpark on the east bank (adjacent to Kölnmesse) is a flat park with good surfaces for interval work
• The Grüngürtel (green belt) encircling central Cologne provides a 25 km loop for athletes building high-mileage training weeks
• Fühlinger See north of the city offers flat lakeside paths popular with Cologne's triathlon and marathon community

Race Day Tips

• Arrive early -- FIBO attendance inflates all queue times at Kölnmesse. Allow 2 hours before your wave start on race day
• During FIBO, the venue entrance process may differ from standard HYROX events. Check the official race guide for athlete-specific entry points separate from the FIBO general admission
• April in Cologne is mild (12-16°C average) but variable. The venue interior will be warm from the crowds and activity -- dress for race conditions rather than the outdoor temperature
• Bring your own nutrition. FIBO has many exhibitors including nutrition brands with samples, but on race day bring your race-tested gels and energy sources
• Spectators: FIBO general admission covers entry to the Kölnmesse grounds. Supporters may need to navigate FIBO floor plans to reach the HYROX race area -- plan this in advance
• Post-race, explore the FIBO exhibition floor before it closes. It is one of the best places in Europe to test new fitness equipment, meet coaches, and discover new training products
• Cologne's Altstadt (Old Town) and Hohe Straße shopping street are within walking distance via the Hohenzollern Bridge for post-race meals and drinks
