HYROX Chengdu 2026

Chengdu is the capital of Sichuan province and one of China's fastest-growing cities, with a metropolitan population of over 21 million. Known globally for its food culture, giant panda research centres and laid-back lifestyle, Chengdu has also become a hub for fitness and endurance sports in western China. The city's investment in sports infrastructure — including hosting the 2023 FISU World University Games — has put it firmly on the international events calendar.

The August 1-2 dates fall during Chengdu's hottest and most humid period. While the HYROX race itself takes place in a climate-controlled indoor venue, athletes should be prepared for intense heat and humidity during travel, warm-ups and any outdoor training in the days before the event. Temperatures in August typically reach 30-35 degrees Celsius with humidity above 80 percent. Hydration and heat acclimatisation are essential for anyone arriving from cooler climates.

Getting There

By Air

  • Chengdu Tianfu International Airport (TFU) — opened in 2021, this is Chengdu's primary international airport and one of China's newest. Direct flights from most major Chinese cities, and international connections to Bangkok, Singapore, Seoul, Tokyo, Dubai and select European destinations
  • TFU is approximately 50 km southeast of the city centre. Chengdu Metro Line 18 connects TFU to downtown in about 60 minutes. Taxi or DiDi takes 45-70 minutes depending on traffic
  • Chengdu Shuangliu Airport (CTU) — the older airport, now handling mainly domestic and some regional flights. CTU is closer to the city centre (about 16 km) and well-connected by Metro Line 10
  • Check which airport your flight uses before booking ground transport. Most international flights now use TFU

By Train

  • Chengdu East Railway Station — the main high-speed rail hub, with CRH bullet train services to Chongqing (1.5 hours), Wuhan (4 hours), Xi'an (3.5 hours), Kunming (5 hours) and Shanghai (8 hours via Wuhan)
  • Chengdu South Railway Station — handles some regional services and is connected to Metro
  • China's high-speed rail network is extensive and efficient. Tickets can be booked on 12306.cn or via the Trip.com app (English available)
  • From Wuhan to Chengdu by high-speed train: approximately 4 hours, making it feasible to combine both HYROX events in one trip

By Car

  • Driving in Chengdu city is not recommended for international visitors due to traffic density, unfamiliar road systems and language barriers
  • DiDi (China's ride-hailing app) is the easiest way to get around. It works similarly to Uber and has an English-language interface
  • Chengdu Metro covers most of the city and is cheap, efficient and air-conditioned — a relief during August

Where to Stay

  • Tianfu New Area / Century City — if the venue is Century City Convention Center, this is the closest area with modern hotels including international chains (Hilton, InterContinental, Marriott)
  • Chunxi Road / Taikoo Li — the commercial heart of Chengdu, with hotels at every price point, excellent food and shopping, and good Metro connections. Approximately 30-40 minutes to either venue by Metro
  • Kuanzhai Alley area — historic and tourist-friendly neighbourhood with boutique hotels and traditional Sichuan teahouses. Walkable, atmospheric and central
  • Near Chengdu East Station — convenient if arriving by train, with budget to mid-range hotels. Direct Metro access to most parts of the city
  • Chengdu accommodation is good value by international standards. Book 2-3 weeks ahead. August is a busy travel month domestically due to summer holidays

Tip: Chengdu is one of the best food cities in the world. Budget extra time (and stomach capacity) for hotpot, mapo tofu, dan dan noodles and street food in Jinli Ancient Street. Eat well before race week — Sichuan food is spicy, so moderate your chili intake in the 48 hours before racing.

Training in Chengdu

Chengdu's fitness scene has expanded rapidly alongside China's functional fitness boom. CrossFit boxes and gym chains are widespread, though HYROX-specific equipment (SkiErgs, sleds) may be less consistently available than in European or North American cities.

  • CrossFit Chengdu — one of the city's established CrossFit affiliates, with functional training equipment. Contact via WeChat for drop-in availability
  • Supermonkey — boutique fitness chain popular in Chinese cities, with HIIT and functional training classes bookable by session
  • Will's Gym / Tera Wellness — large chain gyms with cardio equipment, free weights and basic functional training gear
  • For HYROX-specific equipment (SkiErg, Concept2 rower, sled), CrossFit affiliates are the most reliable option. Check availability before your visit

Running Routes

  • Jin River (Jinjiang) path — a paved riverside path running through the city centre, flat and well-maintained. 5-15 km depending on the section. Popular with local runners morning and evening
  • People's Park (Renmin Park) — central park good for short recovery runs and a cultural experience. Locals practise tai chi and dance here in the mornings
  • Huanhua Creek Greenway — a leafy, shaded path along a creek in the west of the city, approximately 5 km. Relatively cool in summer due to tree cover
  • Tianfu Greenway — a 100 km city-wide greenway loop connecting parks, rivers and neighbourhoods. Long sections are available for extended runs in various parts of the city
  • Qingcheng Mountain area — for trail runners willing to travel 60 km west of the city, the UNESCO-listed Qingcheng Mountains offer forest trails and serious elevation gain
  • August heat warning: Run before 7 AM or after 7 PM. Chengdu in August is consistently 30-35 degrees Celsius with very high humidity. Carry water, use electrolytes and cut your pace. Heat exhaustion risk is real for athletes not acclimatised to subtropical conditions

Nearby HYROX Races

China's growing HYROX calendar provides several options across the country:

  • Wuhan — approximately 1,100 km east, 1.5 hours by flight or 4 hours by high-speed rail. The closest other Chinese HYROX event to Chengdu
  • Shanghai — approximately 1,900 km east, 2.5 hours by flight or 8 hours by high-speed rail
  • Beijing — approximately 1,500 km northeast, 2 hours by flight or 8 hours by high-speed rail
  • Bangkok — approximately 2,000 km south, 3 hours by direct flight from TFU

Race Day Tips

  • Arrive at least 90 minutes before your wave start. Chinese venue logistics can differ from European events — allow extra time for registration and wayfinding
  • Heat and humidity: The race is indoors and climate-controlled, but the journey to the venue and any outdoor warm-up will expose you to 30-35 degrees Celsius and high humidity. Stay in air conditioning as long as possible before your start. Pre-hydrate aggressively the day before
  • Payment: China operates largely on mobile payment (WeChat Pay, Alipay). International credit cards are accepted at major hotels but less reliably elsewhere. Set up WeChat Pay or Alipay before arriving if possible, or carry cash (CNY) as backup
  • Internet: Many international websites and apps (Google, Instagram, WhatsApp) are blocked in China. Download a VPN before arriving if you need access to these services
  • Bring your own gels, energy bars and water. Familiar Western sports nutrition brands may be hard to find locally
  • DiDi is the easiest way to reach the venue. Download the app before travelling to China
  • Spectators get in free at HYROX events
  • Mandarin is the primary language. English is spoken at international hotels and some fitness venues, but less commonly in taxis, restaurants and public transport. Having key phrases or a translation app is useful
  • Post-race: Sichuan hotpot for recovery fuel (the protein and sodium are ideal for refuelling), followed by a stroll through Jinli Ancient Street or tea at a traditional teahouse in People's Park
