HYROX Cancun 2026 takes place March 13-15 — a rare opportunity to combine a competitive fitness race with a world-class beach destination. Cancun's turquoise Caribbean waters and warm March weather make it one of the most appealing HYROX race weekends in the entire 2026 calendar. Come to race hard, stay to recover by the sea.

March is one of the best months to visit Cancun. Average temperatures of 26-29°C, low humidity by Caribbean standards, and consistent sunshine make it ideal for both competing and sightseeing. The HYROX race will be held indoors in a climate-controlled venue, so outdoor conditions affect your travel experience more than the race itself. For athletes based in North America, CUN's direct flight connections from dozens of US and Canadian cities make Cancun one of the most accessible international HYROX destinations on the calendar.

Date & Venue

The Cancun Convention Center and Centro de Convenciones Cancun in the Hotel Zone are the most likely venue options given their scale and existing event infrastructure. The Hotel Zone (Zona Hotelera) is a narrow 22 km strip on a barrier island, with most large hotels, restaurants, and venues concentrated along Boulevard Kukulcan. Getting There

By Air

• Cancun International Airport (CUN) — one of Mexico's top three busiest airports. Direct flights from dozens of US cities (Miami, Dallas, New York, Chicago, Los Angeles), Canadian cities (Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver), European hubs (London, Madrid), and Latin America
• CUN is approximately 16 km south of central Cancun and about 20-25 km from the southern Hotel Zone
• ADO buses operate between CUN and the Hotel Zone bus station (Cancun Centro). Journey time approximately 30-40 minutes. Affordable and reliable
• Taxis from CUN are available at set fares (approximately MXN 300-450 to the Hotel Zone). Agree on the price before entering
• Private airport transfers — many hotels offer transfers or transfer services can be booked online before arrival for a fixed fee
• Uber operates in Cancun but is not permitted to pick up from the airport terminal. Walk to the main road exit for Uber pickups

By Bus & Local Transport

• R-1 bus route — the R-1 local bus runs the entire length of the Hotel Zone (Zona Hotelera) along Boulevard Kukulcan, from Plaza Caracol to the southern hotel strip. Frequency is good and fares are very cheap (approximately MXN 12-15). Slow but useful for short hops
• ADO — the premium long-distance bus connects Cancun to other Mexican cities including Mexico City (24 hours) and Playa del Carmen (1 hour)
• Taxis within the Hotel Zone are plentiful but negotiate or confirm the rate before getting in. Uber is cheaper and eliminates negotiation
• There is no metro or light rail in Cancun

By Car / Rental

• Car rental is available from all major agencies at CUN. Driving in Cancun is straightforward — the Hotel Zone is essentially one long boulevard
• Parking is available at most major venues and hotels
• Having a rental car gives flexibility for day trips to Tulum, Chichen Itza, and the cenotes of the Yucatan Peninsula

Where to Stay

Cancun's accommodation divides cleanly into the Hotel Zone (Zona Hotelera) and downtown Cancun (Centro). Most athletes will prefer the Hotel Zone for its proximity to venues, beach access, and resort atmosphere.

• Hotel Zone — north strip (km 1-9) — closest to Convention Center area, more lively bar and restaurant scene, good beach access. Many all-inclusive and boutique hotel options
• Hotel Zone — south strip (km 10-22) — quieter, larger resort properties, excellent beach. Slightly further from some venues but typically better value for the quality
• Cancun Centro (downtown) — the authentic Cancun where locals live and eat. Significantly cheaper than the Hotel Zone. Less beach access but better local food, markets, and a more genuine Mexican atmosphere. R-1 bus connects to the Hotel Zone
• All-inclusive resorts are very popular in Cancun and offer excellent value when factoring in food and drinks — ideal for athletes fuelling a hard race weekend
• March is high season in Cancun. Book accommodation as early as possible once the venue and your race slot are confirmed

Tip: Cancun's March weather is outstanding. Book accommodation with beach access for post-race recovery — the Caribbean water is warm and the beach atmosphere is perfect for the day after racing.

Training in Cancun

Cancun's fitness infrastructure is primarily resort-based but has grown to include standalone CrossFit and functional training studios catering to both locals and fitness-oriented tourists.

• CrossFit Cancun — established CrossFit affiliate in the Cancun area with functional training equipment. Best contacted directly before your trip to confirm visiting athlete policies and equipment availability
• Hotel fitness centres — most major Hotel Zone resorts have well-equipped fitness centres with cardio machines, free weights, and cable equipment. Some (Fiesta Americana, Hard Rock, Hyatt) have particularly good facilities
• Boutique studios — a growing number of F45 and functional training studios operate in the Hotel Zone and downtown Cancun targeting fitness-conscious travellers and expats
• HYROX-specific equipment (ski erg, sled track) is most reliably found at CrossFit affiliates. Check before visiting

Running Routes

• Boulevard Kukulcan — the main road through the Hotel Zone has a pedestrian/cycling path for much of its length. Running along it offers views of the lagoon and ocean. Best in the early morning before traffic builds
• Playa Delfines — one of Cancun's more spacious public beaches at the southern end of the Hotel Zone. The wide hard-packed sand offers excellent flat beach running at low tide
• Parque Las Palapas (downtown) — a central park in Cancun Centro with paths suitable for shorter runs and a good community running scene
• Nizuc Wetlands — nature reserve at the southern tip of the Hotel Zone with trail paths through mangroves and coastal ecosystem
• Run early morning (6-8 AM) to avoid heat. March temperatures are warm but manageable in the early hours. Humidity increases through the day
• Stay hydrated: Caribbean humidity combined with running effort requires higher fluid intake than temperate climates

Race Day Tips

• Arrive at the venue at least 90 minutes before your wave start. New event setups in resort destinations can have unexpected logistics challenges
• Bring a printed or digital race confirmation and a valid ID (passport for international athletes)
• Cancun in March is warm. Even with air-conditioning, pre-race hydration is critical. Increase water intake the day before racing
• Sun is intense in Cancun — use sunscreen generously on any outdoor pre-race activity or warm-up
• Download Uber before arriving in Cancun — it is the easiest way to get around without negotiating taxi fares. Remember Uber does not operate at the airport terminal
• Carry some MXN cash for local buses, street food, and smaller vendors who may not accept cards
• Post-race, the Hotel Zone beach is steps away for recovery. Cold agua de coco (coconut water) from beach vendors is a local favourite for electrolyte replacement
• Montezuma's revenge: Stick to bottled water and be selective about street food in the days before your race to avoid digestive issues on race day
