HYROX Bologna 2026

Bologna hosts HYROX on April 4-6, 2026, making it one of the first Italian events of the season. Known as La Rossa for its terracotta buildings and porticoed streets, Bologna is also one of Italy's most food-focused cities -- making post-race recovery an easy and enjoyable experience.

April is an excellent time to race in Bologna. Spring weather brings temperatures of 15-20°C outdoors, while event venues stay climate-controlled indoors. The city's central location in northern Italy makes it one of the most accessible stops on the Italian HYROX calendar, sitting on the main high-speed rail corridor between Milan and Rome.

Date & Venue

BolognaFiere is one of Italy's premier exhibition complexes and the most likely venue given its size and proximity to the city centre. It has hosted major international trade fairs and sporting events, and has the floor space required for HYROX's full course layout. Follow hyrox.com for the official venue confirmation.

Getting There

By Air

• Bologna Guglielmo Marconi Airport (BLQ) -- 6 km northwest of the centre. Direct flights from London (Gatwick, Ryanair), Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Munich, Barcelona, Paris and other major European cities. The Marconi Express people-mover connects to Bologna Centrale station in 7 minutes
• The airport is small and easy to navigate. Passport control and baggage claim are fast compared to major hubs
• Taxis from the airport to the city centre cost approximately €15-20. Uber also operates in Bologna

By Train

• Bologna Centrale -- one of Italy's busiest rail junctions. High-speed Frecciarossa and Italo services run to Milan (1h), Florence (35 min), Rome (2.5h), Naples (3h) and Venice (1.5h)
• From central Europe, connections via Milan from Zurich, Munich and Frankfurt are straightforward
• Bologna Centrale is also on the AV/AC (Alta Velocita / Alta Capacita) line, one of Italy's most heavily used rail corridors
• BolognaFiere is located adjacent to Bologna Centrale, making it an extremely convenient venue for train arrivals

By Public Transport

• Bologna's city centre is compact and walkable from Centrale station (15 minutes on foot)
• TPER buses cover the wider city and surrounding areas. Journey planning is available via the Moovit app
• BikeSquare and other bike-share services are available for flat cross-city journeys
• If the venue is BolognaFiere, it is directly adjacent to Centrale station -- no additional transport needed

By Car

• Bologna sits at the intersection of the A1 (Milan-Florence-Rome), A13 (Padova) and A14 (Adriatic coast) motorways
• Driving to Bologna from northern Italy, the Veneto or the Adriatic coast is easy
• The city centre has a ZTL (traffic restricted zone). BolognaFiere has parking but it fills up quickly on event days -- arriving by train or public transport is the better option

Where to Stay

Bologna is compact and well-served by hotels across all price points. April is a popular month for trade fairs at BolognaFiere, so check availability early.

• City centre (Piazza Maggiore area) -- the heart of Bologna. Walking distance to everything, including the main porticoed streets. Hotel options range from boutique to large chains
• Near Bologna Centrale -- the station area has several large hotels (UNA Hotel, ibis, NH) that are convenient for race morning logistics. If the venue is BolognaFiere, this is essentially walking distance
• BolognaFiere area -- a few business hotels near the exhibition complex offer the shortest race-day journey. Options include the Starhotels Excelsior and smaller boutique guesthouses
• Budget options: Bologna has a good supply of B&Bs and guesthouses in the university district (near Via Zamboni). Slightly further from the station but well connected by bus

Tip: Check BolognaFiere's own event calendar before booking accommodation. Trade fairs running parallel to HYROX can push hotel prices up and reduce availability. Booking early gives the best combination of price and location.

Training in Bologna

Bologna has a solid sports culture driven partly by its large student population. Functional fitness gyms and CrossFit boxes have grown significantly in recent years.

• CrossFit Bologna -- the local CrossFit community hosts drop-in sessions and has the basic equipment needed for HYROX prep. Contact in advance to confirm SkiErg and sled availability
• Functional training studios -- several studios in the Navile, Mazzini and Bolognina districts have invested in conditioning equipment suitable for HYROX training
• FitActive and other mid-range commercial gyms have rowing machines and basic cardio equipment across the city
• The University of Bologna sports facilities (CUS Bologna) are extensive and available to non-students via short-term membership

Running Routes

• Parco della Montagnola -- a hilltop park near Centrale station with paths and good views over the city. Good for shorter sessions close to most central accommodation
• Giardini Margherita -- Bologna's main city park in the south. Flat inner paths and gentle outer loops totalling about 3 km. Popular with local runners
• Colli Bolognesi (Bologna Hills) -- for those wanting elevation and trails, the hills to the south offer excellent running routes. Reachable by bus from Piazza Maggiore
• The porticoed streets are remarkable but not ideal for interval training -- the uneven surfaces and pedestrian traffic make them better suited for easy recovery walks

• Rimini: May 28-31, 2026 (approximately 110 km southeast, under 1 hour by train on the Adriatic coast)
• Rome: HYROX Rome 2026 -- September 24-27 (approximately 380 km south, about 2.5 hours by Frecciarossa)
• Milan: HYROX Milan 2026 -- December 5-6 (approximately 210 km northwest, about 1 hour by high-speed train)
• Vienna: HYROX Vienna 2026 -- check dates (approximately 6 hours by train via Venice)

Race Day Tips

• Arrive at least 90 minutes before your scheduled wave. Registration and bag drop queues are longest in the first two hours of each event day
• Collect your race bib and timing chip at the registration desk. Bring ID and your confirmation email
• April mornings in Bologna can be cool. Bring a warm layer for the pre-race wait if you are in an early wave
• Bring your own gels and nutrition. HYROX vendor stands are on-site but queues build before busy waves
• Spectators: free entry. Italian home support is enthusiastic -- use the crowd energy
• The venue's proximity to Centrale station makes post-race logistics easy. Many restaurants and bars are within walking distance of the city centre
• Bag drop is available and secure. Use it -- carrying a pack during the race is not an option
