HYROX Training in Rotterdam

Rotterdam is now in its fourth edition of HYROX, which makes it one of the longest-running Dutch events alongside Amsterdam. The race has settled into Rotterdam Ahoy in mid-April and the local scene has grown around it — several gyms now carry the HYROX Training Club badge, and finding a simulation session in the weeks before the race is easy.

Rotterdam itself is an unusually good HYROX city because the terrain works in your favour. The Netherlands is flat — properly flat, not "kind of flat" — which means Dutch runners naturally train on the same kind of ground they race on. You're not doing hill reps because there are no hills to climb. You're doing 1km repeats along the Maas because that's what the race asks for too.

HYROX Training Clubs and CrossFit Boxes

Rotterdam has several officially-listed HYROX Training Clubs plus a strong background of CrossFit boxes. Pricing is moderate by western European standards: €80-120 per month for a full CrossFit membership, drop-ins €15-25. Cheaper than Zurich, similar to Berlin.

  • GYMFIELD (near Kralingse Zoom): Official HYROX Training Club, fully equipped with HYROX and Concept2 kit. The most purpose-built HYROX option in Rotterdam — go here if you want station-specific simulation work rather than a general CrossFit class.
  • Vondelgym Rotterdam: Official HYROX gym with plenty of dedicated HYROX classes on the schedule. Part of the Vondelgym network (Amsterdam's Vondelpark-area chain). Clean setup, reliable programming.
  • CrossFit Kralingen: Centrally located in the Kralingen district, 10 minutes from Kralingse Zoom and directly next to Kralingse Bos. The location gives you easy access to the park for running sessions around the box workout.
  • REP Rotterdam: Runs HYROX alongside Olympic weightlifting, gymnastics, powerlifting, open gym and CrossFit WODs. Good option if you want to mix HYROX prep with strength work in a single facility.
  • Wildhearts Training Club (Kralingen-Crooswijk): Bredestraat 15a. Cross-training, functional training, HYROX and yoga in one space. Smaller scale, more community-oriented than the larger chains.

For cheaper cardio-only access, Basic Fit has locations across Rotterdam at €20-30/month for 24/7 gym access. They won't have sleds or competition-height wall balls but they cover treadmill and rowing work. TrainMore and Fit For Free sit in the mid-range at €25-45/month. Urban Sports Club is widely accepted in the Netherlands and gives you flexible access across multiple boxes and studios — useful for travellers in town for a few days.

Running Routes

Four routes cover most of what a Rotterdam-based HYROX athlete needs. All of them are flat — this is the Netherlands.

  • Kralingse Plas: 5 km loop around the lake in Kralingse Bos, 2 km east of the city centre. Paved path, tree cover for shade in summer, measured — a popular parkrun venue. The standard Rotterdam running session location. Accessible by tram 7 and 21 or metro to Kralingse Zoom.
  • Maas riverfront: Flat asphalt paths along both banks of the Nieuwe Maas. From the Erasmusbrug you can run east toward Kralingen or west toward Delfshaven, up to 10 km in each direction. Perfect for tempo work and 1km repeats. Well-lit in the central sections.
  • Het Park (Museumpark): Small central park between Witte de Withstraat and the Euromast. Short loops suitable for warm-ups and intervals during a lunch break. Not large enough for long runs but useful if you're staying in the centre.
  • Zuiderpark: Large park in Rotterdam-Zuid, about 2 km from Rotterdam Ahoy itself. Paved loops, quiet on weekdays. A good option for athletes staying near the race venue.

HYROX Rotterdam at Ahoy

Rotterdam Ahoy sits at Ahoyweg 10, 3084 BD Rotterdam — in the Zuidplein district in Rotterdam-Zuid. It's a large multi-purpose arena, best known as a concert venue but with enough floor space for a full HYROX course. The 2026 race runs from April 15-19 across multiple waves each day.

Getting there:

  • Metro: Lines D and E both stop at Zuidplein, 10 minutes from Rotterdam Centraal southbound. From Zuidplein it's a 5-minute walk to the Ahoy entrance. This is the easiest option by far.
  • Train: Rotterdam Centraal is the hub — ICE to Amsterdam, Thalys to Brussels and Paris, plus regional trains across the Netherlands. From Centraal take the metro as above.
  • Driving: On-site parking at P1 and P2 is closest to the entrance but fills early on race day. Off-site parking plus metro is often faster than fighting for the closer spots.
  • Airport: Rotterdam The Hague Airport (RTM) is 20 minutes away. Amsterdam Schiphol is 60 minutes by direct train and serves far more international destinations — most overseas athletes fly into Schiphol and take the train down.

Doors open at Ahoy at 07:00. Check the exact wave timing on hyrox.com closer to the race. For accommodation, anywhere in the central Rotterdam CBD puts you within 15 minutes of the venue by metro. Staying around Zuidplein itself is closer to the venue but further from restaurants and nightlife.

Rotterdam Weather

Mid-April in Rotterdam is mild but unpredictable — 8-15°C, frequent showers, occasional warm days in the 18-20°C range. The race itself is indoor so the weather only matters for travel logistics and for your build-up training. Pack a waterproof jacket for the week; you will need it at some point.

The Dutch running surface — wide, paved, mostly sheltered — handles rain well. You can maintain your training through April weather without serious problems, which is more than you can say for Manchester or Chicago at the same time of year.
