HYROX Training in Toronto
Toronto has one underrated HYROX asset that most of North America does not: 56 continuous kilometres of flat paved waterfront running directly next to downtown. The Martin Goodman Trail follows Lake Ontario from Etobicoke in the west to the Scarborough Bluffs in the east, and for a HYROX athlete it is everything the course asks for — no hills, measured distance, clean surface, open sightlines. Chicago has the Lakefront Trail. Toronto has the Martin Goodman. Both cities happen to face the same lake, and both have figured out what to do with it.
The race itself is held at the Enercare Centre on Exhibition Place in early October — Toronto's best weather window, when the summer humidity has cleared out but winter is still a month away. The local box scene clusters around Liberty Village, the waterfront and King West. Pricing is Canadian-expensive but below NYC.
CrossFit Boxes and HYROX Gyms
Toronto's HYROX scene is smaller than Melbourne or New York but has been building since HYROX added Canadian races. CrossFit memberships run CAD 180-240 per month, drop-ins CAD 35-45 — expensive but less than NYC or Melbourne.
- CrossFit Liberty Village: Located in the heart of Liberty Village, close to the Enercare Centre and the waterfront. Good HYROX station setup and programming that picks up noticeably in the weeks before the Toronto race. Walkable from downtown hotels on race weekend.
- CrossFit YKV: Community-heavy box with sleds on turf and open-floor conditioning space. Less of a pure HYROX focus, more of a solid all-round affiliate — good for athletes who want a steady weekly rhythm during build-up.
- CrossFit Toronto: The city's longest-running affiliate. Central location, established coaching, full equipment. A good default choice for travellers who just want a reliable drop-in for station simulation.
- Resilience Fitness: Smaller functional-fitness operation that has covered HYROX Toronto in detail and runs HYROX-specific training blocks. Check their schedule for dedicated simulation sessions.
For cheaper cardio access, GoodLife Fitness has over 60 locations in the Greater Toronto Area at CAD 30-55 per month. Rowers and SkiErgs are common at the larger locations but sleds and competition wall balls are not. The realistic Toronto hybrid: GoodLife for running, rowing and general cardio plus a weekly CrossFit drop-in at Liberty Village or YKV for the station simulation work.
The Martin Goodman Trail
Toronto has genuinely great waterfront running. The Martin Goodman Trail is the backbone — 56 km of flat, paved, mostly uninterrupted path along the Lake Ontario shore. This is your default training surface for almost any session. But the city has other options too:
- Martin Goodman Trail (central section): From HTO Park and Harbourfront west through Ontario Place to Humber Bay is about 6 km of the cleanest urban waterfront running in Canada. Perfect for tempo runs and 1km repeats. Cross the Humber River Arch Bridge for a dramatic turnaround point.
- Martin Goodman (eastern extension): From downtown east through the Beaches neighbourhood to the Scarborough Bluffs is another 20 km. Quieter than the central section, good for longer easy runs and Sunday long runs during build-up.
- High Park: 400 acres west of downtown, with a paved outer loop and several gravel inner paths. Gentle hills — not Auckland volcanic cones, but enough rise to matter over a 5 km loop. Good for variety when the waterfront feels repetitive.
- Don Valley Brick Works trails: Further from downtown but gives you an actual trail running environment — ravine paths, some climbs, a different feel from the waterfront. Useful for long runs on recovery days.
HYROX Toronto at the Enercare Centre
The Enercare Centre is at 100 Princes' Blvd on the Exhibition Place grounds, directly on the Lake Ontario waterfront west of downtown. It's one of the largest exhibition venues in Canada with plenty of floor space for a full HYROX course. The building is adjacent to BMO Field (Toronto FC) and the Princes' Gates, which makes it easy to find and easy to reach.
Getting there:
- TTC streetcar: 509 Harbourfront or 511 Bathurst both stop at Exhibition station, directly adjacent to the venue. From Union Station downtown it's a 15-minute ride. This is the smartest option for race day.
- GO Train: Exhibition GO station is a 5-minute walk from the Enercare Centre. Useful if you're staying in the suburbs or coming from Hamilton or Mississauga.
- Driving: Parking on the Exhibition Place grounds is available but fills quickly on event weekends. Expect premium rates.
- Airport: From Pearson (YYZ), take the UP Express train to Union Station (25 minutes), then streetcar 509 to Exhibition (another 15 minutes). Total transit time is about 45 minutes.
For race weekend accommodation, downtown Toronto hotels put you within a 15-minute streetcar ride. Liberty Village itself has fewer hotel options but Gladstone House and The Bentway Suites are walkable to the venue and quieter than the downtown core on race morning.
Toronto Weather: Why October Works
The HYROX Toronto race timing is not an accident. Early October in Toronto sits between 8-15°C with low humidity and dry air — properly comfortable for hard physical work. The leaves are turning, the summer crowds are gone from the Martin Goodman Trail, and the sun still sets late enough that evening outdoor sessions work. Build-up training in August and September is warmer and more humid but still workable outdoors.
Toronto winters (December through March) are a different story. Average January highs are around -1°C, regular wind chill down to -15°C, and the Martin Goodman Trail becomes patchy with ice and salt. Indoor training is the realistic plan from December through late March. If you're building toward Toronto specifically, most of your outdoor volume should happen between April and October.
