HYROX Training in Manchester

Manchester gets the HYROX race in late January, which is the wettest, darkest part of the British year. That sounds bad until you realise it is actually a forcing function: nobody in Manchester pretends they will train outdoors year-round, so the indoor scene is solid. The city has a real cluster of CrossFit boxes around the Northern Quarter, Ancoats and Salford, the race itself is held in the middle of town at a former train station, and the post-race walk to a pub takes about three minutes.

What Manchester gives you, beyond the obvious gym scene, is a dense city centre where the race venue, the major hotels and several solid boxes are all within a 1km walk of each other. London's HYROX is in Olympic Park; Manchester's is in Manchester Central, which is right next to St Peter's Square. Different scale, different feel.

CrossFit Boxes and Gyms

The Manchester box scene clusters in three areas: the Northern Quarter and Ancoats east of the city centre, Salford and Salford Quays to the west, and a few standout options in the suburbs. Pricing is consistent: £80-120 per month for a full membership, drop-ins £15-20.

  • CrossFit Ancoats: Probably the best-known HYROX-friendly box in Manchester. Sleds on turf, multiple SkiErgs, wall balls at competition height. Walking distance from the Northern Quarter and the venue itself.
  • CrossFit 3D: Long-running affiliate that has been programming HYROX-specific sessions since before the format hit the UK. Their HYROX Manchester training club is one of the more organised group programmes in the city.
  • Steel Foundry CrossFit (Salford): West side of the city, easy access from Salford Crescent station. Dedicated HYROX programme alongside the regular CrossFit classes. Good if you are based west of the centre.
  • TRAIN Manchester: Functional training studio with a HYROX-specific training club. Less of a CrossFit affiliate vibe, more of a pure HYROX prep gym.
  • Fighting Fit Performance Centre: Smaller, performance-oriented, handles HYROX prep alongside combat sports conditioning.

If you only need rowers, treadmills and SkiErgs, the chain gyms cover it. PureGym, The Gym Group and Third Space Deansgate (the premium option) are all within walking distance of the race venue. None will have a sled or a 9-foot wall ball target, so plan one drop-in at a real box per week for the simulation work.

Running Routes

Manchester rains. That is not a complaint — it just means your running plan needs to accept that you will be wet a lot of the time, and pick routes where wet feet do not also mean dangerous footing.

  • Bridgewater Way (canal towpath): The most reliable flat running surface in the city. Traffic-free, well-drained, runs from the centre out toward Sale and on to Lymm. Perfect for tempo runs and easy mileage. Pick up the towpath at Castlefield, two minutes from Deansgate-Castlefield tram.
  • Heaton Park: Manchester's biggest park, in the north. Hilly enough to make a difference, soft surfaces for variety. The 5km parkrun loop is a standard training session here.
  • Salford Quays: Flat waterfront loop around MediaCityUK, a proper measured 5km. Good for race-pace 1km repeats. Avoid weekday lunchtime when it fills with office walkers.
  • Wythenshawe Park: South of the centre, big and quiet. Wide paths, decent for longer runs without the city-centre crowd.

HYROX Manchester at Manchester Central

The race is held at the Manchester Central Convention Complex on Windmill Street. The building is a converted Victorian railway terminal — vaulted iron roof, enormous floor plate, properly atmospheric. It has hosted everything from political party conferences to comic conventions and now HYROX. Capacity is generous, the air handling holds up, and you can walk to your hotel afterwards.

Getting there:

  • Metrolink tram: Deansgate-Castlefield, St Peter's Square or Piccadilly Gardens stops are all within five minutes' walk. Trams run every few minutes from the airport and most suburbs. Single fares £2.50-3.50.
  • Train: Manchester Oxford Road and Manchester Piccadilly are both walkable. Piccadilly is the major intercity hub for connections from London (2 hours by Avanti West Coast), Birmingham, Leeds and Edinburgh.
  • Airport: Manchester Airport (MAN) is about 20km south. Direct train to Piccadilly takes 20 minutes, tram takes around 50.

For where to stay, anything in the M1, M2 or M3 postcodes will put you within a 20-minute walk. The Hilton Manchester Deansgate, Radisson Blu Edwardian and Premier Inn Deansgate are the obvious tier — Premier Inn for budget, Hilton for the post-race bar and view from Cloud 23.

Manchester Weather and Indoor Training

Race week is January, when Manchester averages 4-7°C, 17 rainy days a month and short daylight. Outdoor running is doable but unpleasant. The realistic build-up plan is two indoor sessions a week at a box, one outdoor easy run on the Bridgewater Way when the weather cooperates, and one long run at Heaton Park or Wythenshawe Park on the weekend regardless of the weather. Buy decent waterproof kit and stop arguing with it.

Summer in Manchester is mild — rarely above 22°C — and the long daylight from May to August is genuinely good for outdoor training. The race itself is indoor, so the weather only matters for the build-up.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do I train for HYROX in Manchester?

Most serious HYROX athletes in Manchester train at a CrossFit box. CrossFit Ancoats (Northern Quarter), CrossFit 3D, Steel Foundry CrossFit (Salford) and TRAIN Manchester are the established options with sleds, SkiErgs and full HYROX kit. CrossFit memberships run £80-120/month with £15-20 drop-ins. Budget chains like PureGym and The Gym Group cover treadmill and rowing work but lack sleds and competition-height wall balls.

Where is the HYROX Manchester race?

HYROX Manchester is held at the Manchester Central Convention Complex on Windmill Street, M2 3GX — right in the city centre, a short walk from Deansgate, St Peter's Square and Oxford Road station. The complex is the converted former Manchester Central railway station, so it has the floor space for the full HYROX course. Get there via the Metrolink tram (Deansgate-Castlefield or St Peter's Square stops) or any of the surrounding rail stations.

What does HYROX training cost in Manchester?

CrossFit memberships are £80-120 per month with drop-in rates of £15-20 — slightly cheaper than London but more than smaller UK cities. Premium chains like Third Space Deansgate sit in the £100-150/month bracket. Budget chains (PureGym, The Gym Group) start around £20-30/month but won't have HYROX-specific equipment. A common hybrid: cheap chain gym four days a week for treadmill and rowing, plus one drop-in box session for the full station simulation.
